Tanah Lot temple is a major tourist destination here in Bali. Its about 1/2 hour up the coast from Seminyak and I rented a driver (taxi) for half a day $35 to do some touring. I also went early on in the day (cooler) plus less tourists. Driving tho the picturesque Balinese country side and small villages. Tanah Lot has a bustling market(yet more stalls selling souvenirs) place and popular lunch restaurants and snack bars. I thought there where 1000's of tourists here only to be told by my guide that no..., when it is busy you must wait your turn to stand near the edge to get your photos. (I wonder how many Javanese tourists fall off the cliffs?) The surf was massive and crashed upon the temple which is built out on the rock (see pic below) And originally is wasn't surrounded by water, the relentless sea has eroded the land away. The gasps of 'Ohhhh's and Ahhhhhh' where not of the beautiful vista, it was of the massive waves pounding the cliffs, with 100's of tourists not taking pics of the temple but of the waves. There are the most beautiful tropical gardens, manicured lawns with sculptured trees. Beautiful pathways from one impressive point, look out to the next.
